Web-based (near-)real-time analysis of groundwater recharge

To secure the water supply in Saxony in the face of climate change, the VAGRO project is developing innovative methods for accurately estimating groundwater recharge. While the Institute of Groundwater Management at TU Dresden provides the scientific model, PIKOBYTES transforms this data into a (near-)real-time, web-based analysis platform. A state-of-the-art digital tool for resilient water management.

This project was co-funded by the European Union.

Project contents

Securing the water supply in Saxony poses a growing challenge in light of climate change and steadily rising demand from industry and agriculture. To address the uncertainties that have historically plagued estimates of groundwater recharge, the VAGRO project—Development of a Method for Reliably Estimating Groundwater Recharge—was launched.

The soil moisture measurement technology used upon insertion into the soil.

Led by the Institute for Groundwater Management at TU Dresden, the consortium is developing an innovative modeling method based on precise soil moisture measurements and water isotope analyses to provide reliable, comprehensive projections for various land-use types.

In this research context, PIKOBYTES is responsible for the crucial technological implementation by integrating the developed model into the cloud and providing a specialized, web-based visualization and analysis platform. Through this digital transfer, the complex scientific modeling is transformed into a (quasi-)real-time application that enables the dynamic visualization and direct evaluation of groundwater recharge processes.

Thus, the interplay of scientific expertise and digital infrastructure creates a state-of-the-art tool that provides regional water suppliers, agriculture, and industry with a robust decision-making basis for resilient water management.
