The image depicts a database schema diagram with tables and their relationships, focusing on geographical data related to sample sites. Numerous attributes illustrate how geographical and sampling data are structured and linked.
Modernization of the POP-dioxin database

The POP-Dioxin Database of the Federal Government and the Länder is an archiving and information system for the central documentation and evaluation of results of investigation programs on dioxin contamination and environmental pollution by other persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) or brominated flame retardants, which are initiated by the Federal Government and the Länder. The database is managed and operated by the Federal Environment Agency (UBA).

Project contents

As part of the project, a migration concept for the modernization of the database and its applications was created, consisting of an actual state analysis, target concept and work plan for the upcoming development and migration work. Weekly status and workshop meetings were held for the project, as well as a series of individual interviews. In addition, there was an extensive analysis of legacy systems, database schemas and documents and their consolidation and coordination in a new document. In the follow-up project on data modeling and migration, a new data schema for the content of the POP-Dioxin database was developed in close cooperation with the UBA staff and the old database was transformed into this new schema. During the processing period, a Postgresql/PostGIS database was set up at the UBA data center and regularly updated using migration scripts.
