BaumCloud
The aim of BaumCloud is to collect as much digital data on urban trees as possible, bring it into a standardized format and make it accessible to the public.

Project contents

Many municipalities, districts and real estate administrations maintain digital tree registers for the management of their tree population. Some of these stakeholders have released their data to the public as open data. However, this data is available in different locations, partly hard to find and structured in various ways.BaumCloud enables a central collection and standardization of digital tree data. In particular, botanical tree names are automatically detected in the raw data and harmonized to a uniform spelling using linguistic similarity measures. This data is available to the public and is used in the meinGrün research project for scientific evaluations, studies or web applications. The harmonized geodata of approx. 1.5 million urban trees can be obtained via a WFS interface.
The image displays a screenshot of the 'BaumCloudViewer', an interactive map showing tree data across various regions, with trees color-coded by type.
The BaumCloud is a client/server application. The client is implemented as a single page application with React. On the server side, a REST service implemented in JAVA was set up, which receives and validates the data and stores it in a PostgreSQL database. The WFS service was implemented with the UMN Mapserver.
